John 6:26-27
Jesus answered them and said,
Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles,
but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled.
27 Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that
meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto
you: for him hath God the Father sealed.
Jesus looks at the heart. He can tell how we are
responding to Him and God. We need to examine our heart to also determine
why we are following Him. Is it because what He gives to us?
Doesn’t really matter what, peace, courage, even our salvation can get in the
way of following Him because He is Lord.
When we pray are we more interested in asking for things, or
giving Him praise, listening to Him and asking for assignments from Him to be
done for Him? It can be a very fine line; He does want us to ask for His
help in all areas of our life. He does want to bless us and lift us up;
however, if that is the focus of our service to Him then we are serving Him for
the “food,” not for the betterment of His Kingdom.
We want His Blessings; we want to feel His presence in our
lives and see miracles performed in front of us. But, it is easy to
forget, if we are not very careful, that we are not the one in charge – asking
for God’s help and then telling Him how He is to do it. Or, all but
ordering Him to accomplish certain things in Jesus’ Name and not paying
attention to the Holy Spirit’s guidance. We need to concentrate on our
service for Him, not the other way around. The ‘food’ is a byproduct of
that service, not the main reason for serving.
